Finex Engineering Pvt Ltd, Homagama Industrial Estate, Homagama – 08th July to 19th July 2024

From July 8th to July 19th, 2024, the CCI – HWK Vocational Training Improvement Project successfully organized a comprehensive training program on Roofing and Waterproofing Technologies at Finex Engineering Pvt Ltd, located in the Homagama Industrial Estate. This training brought together a diverse group of participants, including seven public sector representatives from VTA, SLGTTI, NAITA, and DTET, as well as two participants from Solico International and three from Finex Engineering.

Training Overview

The training was conducted by Joachim Schaumlöffel, a Master Roofer from Chamber of Skilled Crafts Frankfurt – Rhein- Main, and covered a wide range of essential topics in modern roofing and waterproofing techniques. The curriculum was designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring that participants could effectively apply what they learned in real-world scenarios. The topics covered included:

  • Flat Roof Waterproofing with Bitumen Sheeting: Participants learned about the materials and methods used in waterproofing flat roofs with bitumen sheeting, including the installation process and best practices for ensuring long-term durability.
  • Mechanical Fastening: This module covered the techniques for securely fastening roofing materials, a critical skill for ensuring the integrity and longevity of roof structures.
  • Plastics Loose Laying: Participants explored the use of plastic materials in roofing, focusing on the loose laying method and its applications.
  • Timber Ventilation: Effective ventilation is crucial in roofing, especially when using timber. This session taught participants how to ensure proper ventilation to prevent issues like moisture buildup and rot.
  • Inverted Roof: The concept and construction of inverted roofs were discussed, highlighting the benefits and challenges associated with this roofing type.
  • Liquid Plastic Waterproofing: Participants were introduced to liquid plastic waterproofing solutions, learning about their applications, benefits, and installation techniques.
  • Rain Water Drainage: Effective drainage systems are essential for maintaining roof integrity. This session covered the principles of rainwater drainage and the design of efficient drainage systems.
  • Wall Connection: Proper wall connections are critical for preventing leaks and ensuring the stability of the roofing structure. This module provided practical insights into achieving robust wall connections.
  • General Drainage Principles and Systems: Beyond roof-specific drainage, participants learned about general drainage principles and the various systems used to manage water effectively.
  • Slope: The importance of slope in roofing was emphasized, with discussions on how to design and implement appropriate slopes for different roofing types.
  • Different Constructions: The training also explored various roofing constructions, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the options available and their respective advantages.

The training concluded with a hands-on session where participants applied their newly acquired skills in a controlled environment, ensuring they were well-prepared to implement these techniques in their respective organizations. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the in-depth knowledge and practical experience gained.

The CCI – HWK Vocational Training Improvement Project is proud to have facilitated this successful training program and remains committed to enhancing vocational training standards in Sri Lanka.
